Julie Wasco: The Creator of Our Beach Towel Clip
The head of our company, Julie Wasco, was born in Southeast Michigan. In 1992, she graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in communications. She moved to Grand Rapids to work for Warner-Lambert as a consumer health products representative. She was then hired by Coca-Cola North America as a marketing representative a few years later.
After transferring to Bloomfield Hills with her husband, she got an opportunity to work for Ernst & Young as the Entrepreneur of the Year program manager in Michigan. Interviewing various entrepreneurs gave her the push she needed to start her own business by inventing the perfect beach towel and boat clip: the Slip Clip.
She started making prototypes in the fall of 2011, filed for her LLC in September of 2012, and launched her company in June of 2013. The products are manufactured and printed in Grand Rapids and are currently being sold as a promotional tool. However, she and her team are working hard to put it into the retail market.
Why Julie Invented the Slip Clips
While on a beach in 2007, Julie was getting frustrated every time her beach towel fell when she moved. It was then that she decided to come up with a solution to this problem.
At the time, she was working in the corporate world. But during the 2008 recession, she and her husband lost their jobs. She realized then that she needed to take control of her career.
In 2011, Julie started making her first prototypes. The actual prototype and the patent process began in August 2012. By January 2013, the design and utility patent alongside the trademark registration was submitted. The design patent was quickly approved. In 2014, our trademark was registered, followed by the approval of our utility patent with 22 claims the year after that.
Upon recognizing that our innovation can be used for a wide variety of things other than holding towels onto beach chairs, our team started manufacturing and printing the Slip Clips in April 2013.
